Flying Circus

Flying Circus
Racing Trimaran

The Flying Circus is a “bigger” development of the theme started with the earlier Demon Tricycle and Wild Thing designs. Again it is a lightweight-racing trimaran with accommodation for four or five. It has a large sail plan but the forward position of the floats, ahead of the main hull, enable this sail to be carried in higher winds, particularly on a reach, with minimal risk of lee bowing. This boat also uses “do it yourself” paper honeycomb as a core material in the berths etc. This gives a very light weight but stiff structure. The demountable cross beams are of strip plank construction and the boat is trailable. The asymmetrical dagger boards are mounted in the floats and are built using our highly successful steel mould technique. This makes for more room in the main hull. The better lift to drag ratio associated with asymmetrical foils for a given area  give the Flying Circus a performance edge to windward  The pyramidal nature of the staying of the over-rotating wing mast rig allows the rig to function as part of the structure with the forward shrouds supporting the outboard ends of the forward crossbeams which have a high cantilever load because of the forward positioning of the floats.
